(This refers to the Ember Kit v2. The v1 instructions are still available.)
We recommend hacking the Professional Series 30 Cup Coffee Urn. It has all stainless steal construction and is easy to disassemble/reassemble (you only need Phillips head screwdrivers). You never need to break the seal on the heater to open it up.
The v2 soldering instructions are available as a PDF. We also have a PDF of the drilling template in case you need another.
The v1 hacking instructions are still accurate except for the connections to the board. Instead of using the tyco plug, use the included high temperature wire to hook up the ember kit. We recommend you cut the wire into three equal lengths and strip the ends, then mark one wire “black”, one “white”, and one “red”. The “black”, “white”, and “red” attach to the coffee urn in the same way as in the instructions. To attach the wires to the board, loosen the large screws on top near the heatsink and insert the stripped wire end between the two metal plates. Then tighten the screws so there is a good electrical connection and the wires are not loose. Attach the wires in the order shown in the figure to the left.
We have found that for high power appliances, after running full power a while the new kit can deform slightly (a few mm) on the bottom near the high temperature heatsink. This will not get worse over time, and does not represent a safety risk. The case is made of flame-resistant ABS plastic, and the silicone insert in the case is good up to 400 C.
